Applications are invited from  qualified candidates for admission into the Post-Graduate Diploma (PGD) and the Master of Science (M.Sc) Programmes of the Centre for Marine Pollution Monitoring and Seafood safety (CMPMSS) for the 2020/2021 Academic Session.


INTRODUCTION

In April 2009, the National Center for Marine Pollution Monitoring was established at the University of Port Harcourt for the implementation of the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA Environmental Technical Cooperation Projects with a focus on monitoring marine pollution. The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) jointly fund the programs. The activity of the Center includes; monitoring the protection of science, contamination, and seafood, capability growth, and dissemination of knowledge. Its initiatives focus on conserving, preserving and maintaining our aquatic resources




ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS




Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Environmental Pollution Studies

Candidates should have 5 credits in relevant subjects (Mathematics, English, Biology, Chemistry or Physics and one other subject) in addition to B.Sc in Fisheries, Crop and Soil Science, Biochemistry, Animal and Environmental Biology, Microbiology and Chemistry or in any other relevant course obtained from institutions recognized by the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt. The degree should not go less than Second Class  Honours or equivalent level with a CGPA of 3.00.



Post- Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Environmental Pollution Studies

Candidate should have 5 credits in relevant subjects (Mathematics, English, Biology, Chemistry or Physics and one other subject) at ordinary level School Certificate, in addition to B.Sc in Fisheries, Crop and Soil Science, Biochemistry,Animal and Environmental Biology, Microbiology and Chemistry, obtained from institutions recognized by the Senate of the University of Port Harcourt. The degree should not go less than Third Class with a CGPA of 2.00 on a 5-point scale.



PHILOSOPHY

The programs are focused on the philosophy of training graduates with knowledge of scientific principles which underpin environmental pollution issues of the 20th century. There has been growing concern about the effect of emissions on the environment for many years. The services, then; M.Sc. The PGD in Environmental Pollution Studies aims to rank among Africa 's Best Environmental Scientific, Scientific Advancement and Knowledge Transfer Centre. The focus would be on the provision of standards that would enable graduates to build on their knowledge , skills and contribute to national growth, Self-reliance or entrepreneurship as well as information sharing in the area of studies on environmental pollution. Programs will provide sound training with appropriate realistic experience that will allow students to build skills that will greatly enhance the analytical capacity and critical thinking needed for resolving pollution problems in any facet of the environment.



STRUCTURE OF PROGRAMME

 

The software structure for each course underlined below is modular. -- module is taught in accordance with continuous review, rigorous practical training and analysis. There are community ventures, in addition to course work; field trips to specific sites to gain practical experience and perform studies.

 

DURATION OF PROGRAMME

The minimum and maximum time period for a full-time PGD and M.Sc. Candidates for the degree are 12 months, and 24 months. Arrangement for Part-Time can be considered in such rare instances.



AWARD OF DEGREE

Students successful  at the end of programme shall be awarded Degree PGD or M.Sc.  in Environmental Pollution, applicable.
