About MTN Nigeria

MTN Nigeria is part of the largest cellular telecommunication business in Africa, the MTN Group. On May 16, 2001, following the internationally acclaimed Nigerian GSM auction conducted by the Nigerian Communications Commission earlier in the year, MTN became the first GSM network to make a call. The business then started full commercial operations, starting with Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.

In January 2001, for one of four GSM licenses in Nigeria, MTN charged $285m. To date, over US$1.8 billion has been invested in developing Nigeria's mobile telecommunications infrastructure.

MTN has been gradually deploying its services across Nigeria since its launch in August 2001. It now offers services in 223 towns and counties, more than 10,000 towns and villages, and a rising number of highways nationwide.

Abuja, which encompasses the 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Region. For the first time ever, many of these villages and communities are linked to the telecommunication world.

In January 2003, President Olusegun Obasanjo commissioned the company's digital microwave transmission backbone, the 3,400 Kilometer Y¿elloBahn, which is reputed to be the most comprehensive digital microwave transmission system in all of Africa. The Y'elloBahn has greatly helped increase the efficiency of calls on the MTN network.

The business relies on the core brand principles of leadership, collaboration, honesty, imagination and can-do'. It is proud of its ability to make the impossible real, linking individuals with friends, families and possibilities.

MTN Nigeria has also recently extended its network capacity to include a new prefix 0806 numbering set, making MTN the first GSM network in Nigeria to introduce an additional numbering scheme with 0803
